Inner Peace & Inspired Action

It can be discouraging, even heartbreaking, to hear of tragedies and violence happening in all corners of the world. Witnessing racism, corruption, environmental destruction and human rights abuses in the media — or first-hand — can leave you feeling overwhelmed and confused about what you can do to create real, lasting change.

And it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that there is also a parallel narrative emerging...

This parallel story is one of innovative peacebuilding solutions that are emerging and expanding across the globe — from visionaries, leaders and teachers who are engaging in social and political movements on the global stage to everyday citizens performing great acts of compassion in their homes and communities.

Through these efforts, a new understanding of peace is spreading. An understanding that embraces the deep spiritual realms, as well as grounded, practical actions that can transform difficult situations locally and globally.

Now you can join some of these esteemed thought leaders and trailblazing agents for change sharing the latest knowledge, science, insights and practices for peace. You’ll receive the inspiration and guidance you need to meet conflict with compassion — whether in your own heart, your relationships or our larger world.

Do you ever struggle with knowing the right thing to say when you’re angry or upset? Do you wish you could improve relationships with friends & family, but don’t always know how to navigate conflict in the most generative way? Do you watch the news and fear your city, country or the world are hopeless due to violence, political conflict and war?

Many of us have felt this way at some time or another in our lives. You are not alone.

The good news is that there’s an exponential growth of practical peace programs happening right now! The Everyday Peace Summit will also feature passionate and inspiring leaders in the important and growing field of Peace Education. They’ll share their first-hand experiences of overcoming unimaginable wrongdoing through profound forgiveness, as well as successfully uniting diverse community groups to reduce violence through Peace Education efforts.

Designed as short workshops, this weekly series (Tuesdays at 9am Pacific, June 28 — September 6) will teach invaluable techniques in stress reduction, overcoming fear and self-doubt, developing self esteem, cultivating compassion and forgiveness, communication skills, community peacebuilding and living from a place of inner resilience and Oneness. This series seeks to help you be peace, understand peace, take action for peace.

Have you noticed? There’s a wonderful trend happening where more people, particularly in the Western cultures, are adopting mindfulness practices to experience a greater sense of inner peace in today’s busy world...

Mindfulness is the ultimate experience of being in the present moment, consciously aware of your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and surrounding environment. Mindfulness also involves acceptance of what is — exactly as it is — without preference or judgment of good, bad, right or wrong.

Many spiritual traditions have understood the benefits of mindfulness and meditation practices for thousands of years... Luckily, the rest of us are catching up!

Compassion has also been making headlines recently with more and more people taking action to relieve suffering — for themselves, their loved ones and even strangers across the globe. It’s easy to see how mindfulness and compassion go hand in hand. Human beings are literally hard-wired to take compassionate action when we witness suffering.

During the Global Compassion Summit, produced by The Shift Network in partnership with the Center for Compassion Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford University, we’ll be gathering experts in the fields of mindfulness and compassion for an important conversation on how we got to where we are now — and where the mindfulness and compassion movements are going next.

Global leaders from around the world will highlight stories of how compassion and mindfulness are contributing to a more conscious, peaceful and sustainable world — teachers bringing mindfulness to at-risk youth, attorneys using mindfulness and compassion to shift our legal system, physicians putting “care” back into health care, and activists who are using compassion to anchor their communities together.

During the 2nd annual Global Compassion Summit, you’ll discover:

  • The expansion of mindfulness from the meditation cushion at home, to mindfulness education in schools, community centers, prisons, and nonprofit & for-profit organizations
  • How compassion practices are scientifically proven to decrease anxiety & depression, and increase emotional resilience and happiness
  • Why common humanity is important in the cultivation of compassion, and essential in bridging human divides — replacing prejudice and intolerance with understanding & kindness
  • The impact of mindfulness & compassion programs when adopted in diverse industries such as health care, the legal field and education
  • What you can do to participate in the growing compassion & mindfulness movements

Plus, you’ll experience first-hand how mindfulness and compassion — when combined — can positively impact our world and affect our human evolution!

It’s difficult to make sense of what we see and hear through social media, the news or in our own hometowns — bombings, rampant shootings, racially-motivated crimes and terrorist attacks fill our screens. Our hearts break repeatedly as we witness conflict and military responses in the Middle East, as well as the devastation in Syria and floods of refugees fleeing their homelands...

We’re left wondering how this is even happening and, more importantly, how it can be stopped.

However, there’s good news... brilliant minds and hearts, from both governmental and non-governmental peacebuilding organizations, are giving critical thought to the most effective ways to counter violent actions. These experts understand that countering violent extremism is a complex challenge that requires addressing fundamental social problems and political drivers through a society-wide comprehensive approach.

We can’t address extremism with short-term or fear-based thinking.

Join us for the Countering Violent Extremism Summit, August 10-11, produced by The Shift Network in partnership with Alliance of Peacebuilding. Our hosts and guest speakers will answer your most pressing questions about terrorism — and empower you with accessible, relevant solutions. Plus you’ll hear stories that will restore your hope for our global family.

We’re convening global leaders — non-governmental organizations, government agencies and social science experts — who will engage in thoughtful (and thought-provoking) conversations, exploring:

  • Evidence-based research on the drivers of extremism
  • Innovative peacebuilding approaches to counter violent extremism
  • Current gaps and challenges in preventing and countering violent extremism
  • The role of technology, especially social media, in addressing the violence
  • The real drivers of violent extremism
  • Links between the drivers of violent extremism — and peacebuilding approaches that help abate them
  • Ideas for what you can do in your own life & community to address these complex issues
  • Exactly how US policies affect extremism
  • A greater understanding as to why young men and women are recruited to these organizations and why they say yes to participating
  • Responses from experts to the concern that military responses feed terrorist recruiters

Plus, you’ll discover practical ways to support efforts that counter violent extremism — from personal and political action to bridging divides in your own community!

You may be surprised at the sophistication and accessibility of these new approaches. This summit will take a complex and fearful situation and make it more tangible and less frightening. At the end of this summit, participants will be left with greater understanding and a sense of hope.

When you get right down to it, as a human race we have what it takes to transform our world. We have the will, the intelligence, the resources, the heart and the leaders to address and heal the areas of our planet that need it most.

There are brilliant changemakers all over the globe making meaningful progress on critical issues — the environment, health, human rights, women’s issues, economic justice and peace, to name a few.

So what’s keeping us from achieving global transformation? The fragmentation of changemakers around the world — environmentalists, human rights advocates and healthcare workers, each working in their own silos. We must work in collaboration and partnership to create the comprehensive changes we need... for a world that works for all.

11 Days of Global Unity Summit bridges these gaps by connecting and promoting changemakers who are working within each of the identified “themes” — such as Environment, Health, Human Rights, and Peace — and then mobilizing these agents into “11 Campaigns for Change,” offering a comprehensive blueprint for global transformation. This is an example of truly moving from vision into action!

The 11 Days of Global Unity Summit, produced by The Shift Network in partnership with We, The World, has become a worldwide platform, linking changemakers and their awareness and action campaigns locally to an inspiring global movement for the promotion of peace, justice, sustainability and transformation.

We invite you to join us each day as we discuss and celebrate the 11 Campaigns for Change:

  • September 11 - Unity
  • September 12 - Interdependence
  • September 13 - Environment
  • September 14 - Economic Justice
  • September 15 - Health
  • September 16 - Children And Youth
  • September 17 - Women
  • September 18 - Human Rights
  • September 19 - Freedom
  • September 20 - Disarmament
  • September 21 - Peace

Together, these themes form a blueprint of change for a peaceful, sustainable, transformed world...

During the 11 Days of Global Unity Summit, you’ll discover:

  • A daily dose of positive, uplifting stories that will renew your faith in humanity and hope for our future
  • Extraordinary global peacebuilders and what inspires them
  • The inherent goodness in the world and how our collective light can overcome any darkness we might face as a global family
  • Inspiration from leading luminaries, many of whom have devoted their whole lives to creating peace and a sustainable world for all
  • Leaders who are collectively capable of creating the global transformation that we all would like to see

Plus, join a global community of proactive peacebuilders who are discovering how to BE peace while promoting peace.

We know that you’re a changemaker too, and we’d be delighted to have you join us for this powerful 11-day event!

I welcome this remarkable initiative. — Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury, former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the UN

Together we want to celebrate the 11 Days of Global Unity. It's time for us to realize that we are a part of all the suffering in the world, — those who are hungry and starving, all those animals that face extinction. Then we begin to make the change from 'I' to 'WE'. It's WE — We, The World. It's us together. — Jane Goodall, Primatologist and UN Messenger of Peace
